Card 1 of a sample batch, made with the generator on this site.

Who it’s for

  • Office send-offs where coworkers meet the retiree's family for the first time
  • Retirement lunches, after-work receptions, and backyard parties
  • Teams saying goodbye to someone who has been there for many years
  • Hosts who want stories shared without a formal round of speeches

How to play

  1. Give each player a card and a pen. Players write their name at the top.
  2. Players talk to each other. When someone fits a square, that person signs it. Nobody signs their own card.
  3. By default each person can sign a card once and the first full row, column, or diagonal wins. In the generator you can allow two signatures or switch to “most squares in a set time.”
  4. Plan on about 15–20 minutes for a 4×4 card. That’s a suggestion; adjust it to your group.

Tips for hosting

  • Hand out cards as guests arrive; family and friends who don't know the office crowd get an easy reason to start talking.
  • Edit a few squares to add details only the team would know, like the retiree's first project or a famous desk snack.
  • Ask the guest of honor to sign each finished card, then invite the winner to share the best story they heard.
  • Keep the focus on memories and plans ahead; the prompts skip age, health, and money on purpose, so keep any you add just as light.
  • Collect the signed cards afterward and give them to the retiree as a keepsake of who came and what they remembered.

Questions

Are there jokes about getting older or slowing down?

No. The prompts stay on shared memories, work stories, and plans for travel and hobbies, so the card feels warm rather than teasing.

Can family members who never worked with the retiree play?

Yes. About half the squares are about trips, hobbies, and life outside work, so family and friends can fill a card as easily as coworkers.

Can we play it at a virtual retirement party?

Yes. Send everyone the PNG of a card and have them collect names in chat instead of signatures, then ask a few finishers to share a story on camera.
